A Spring Reset: Welcoming the Season with Intention
By Anna Marie Tyson
There's something almost ceremonial about the shift from winter to spring in the South. One day you're bundled up with a throw blanket and a cup of tea, and the next, you're throwing open windows and feeling that familiar pull to refresh everything around you. Spring doesn't just arrive, it invites us to begin again.
At Fern, we believe that seasonal transitions are the perfect opportunity to reset your home and garden with intention. It's not about a complete overhaul; it's about thoughtful touches that make your space feel alive again. Here's how I approach spring in my own home, and a few of my favorite ways to welcome the season.
Start Outside: The Patio Reset
Before I bring spring inside, I always start with the spaces that have weathered winter's wear. Your patio or porch is likely covered in a blanket of leaves, twigs, and that telltale layer of pollen that coats everything here in South Georgia!
My ritual: A good sweep (or blow, if you have a leaf blower) of the entire outdoor living area. Clear away the debris, wipe down furniture, and suddenly, you remember why you loved that space to begin with. It's like giving your patio permission to be used again.
Once it's clean, I refresh my outdoor pots. Winter's pansies have done their job—now it's time for something brighter. I love filling large planters with a mix of petunias, calibrachoa, and sweet potato vine for that cascading, abundant look. For smaller pots near the door, geraniums and rosemary are my go-to. Rosemary is particularly wonderful because it's beautiful, fragrant, and you can snip a sprig for cooking. Practical elegance at its finest.
Anna's Tip: Don't be afraid to mix your container sizes, heights, textures, and colors on your porch or patio. Varying the scale creates visual interest and makes the whole arrangement feel more curated and less "matchy-matchy."
Bring the Garden Inside
Spring is when our gardens really start to show off, and I'm a firm believer in bringing that beauty indoors. But here's the thing: you need to be prepared.
Anna's Tip: Always keep a few vases around in various heights and mouth sizes. You never know what flower from your garden is blooming beautifully that day and begging to come inside! And don't limit yourself to just flowers! Fresh herbs in a small vase in the kitchen look and smell amazing, and they're practical for cooking too. A few sprigs of mint, basil, or thyme in a bud vase by a kitchen window? Chef's kiss.
At Fern, we carry gorgeous pottery from Wakefield Handmade in collaboration with Rowe Pottery that makes even a simple stem look like a masterpiece. The organic shapes and earthy glazes feel like they were made for spring blooms.
Refresh Your Scent Story
I'm very particular about candles. For me, they're not just about fragrance. They set the entire mood of a room. As we move out of winter's cozy, woodsy scents, I shift to something lighter and more botanical.
Right now, I'm burning a Fern custom candle in my living room—it's fresh without being floral, which I love. In the kitchen, I have a Charleston Candle Company candle that smells like a Southern garden after rain. And for evenings on the porch, Ranger Station Tennessee Tomato Candle is absolute perfection, our ode to summer sun + the fresh, earthy smells of backyard gardening.
The Table: Your Spring Entertaining Canvas
If there's one area of the home that deserves a seasonal refresh, it's the dining table. Spring brings Easter brunches, Mother's Day celebrations, impromptu gatherings with friends- your table is going to get some use, so let's make it beautiful.
I always start with a great foundation. Right now, I'm loving Dash and Albert's indoor/outdoor rugs underneath the dining table. They're durable enough for real life (example: spills from grandchildren and husbands!) but chic enough to make the whole room feel elevated.
For the table itself, think layers: a linen runner, simple white dishes, and then the fun part! Fresh greenery, candles, and a few unexpected touches. A boxwood wreath laid flat in the center of the table with candles nestled inside? Classic. Or collect several vases and group them together with greenery from the store or from outdoors.
Anna's Tip: Swap out your everyday napkins for something special this season. A soft spring stripe or a botanical print instantly elevates even a casual weeknight dinner. We have the most beautiful linens and paper products at Fern that make setting a table feel like an event.
And don't forget the porch table! If you're lucky enough to have an outdoor dining setup, dress it with the same care. A few outdoor pillows and a statement candle, and you're ready to host al fresco all season long.
Little Touches, Big Impact
Spring is also about those small, joyful details that make your house feel like a home. A new throw pillow in a cheerful yellow. A lamp with a fresh shade. A coffee table styled with a beautiful coffee table book and a small pottery dish to corral your remotes (we all have them).
At Fern, we're stocked with gorgeous lamps, pillows, and pottery that make refreshing a room feel effortless. Sometimes all it takes is one new piece to make everything else feel new again.
And if you have a front door that's looking a little tired? A fresh boxwood wreath with a classic sash does wonders. Simple, elegant, timeless.
Easter Magic in Little Fern
For those of you with little ones (or grandchildren you spoil), let me tell you! Little Fern is ready for spring. Easter baskets don't have to be full of plastic junk that breaks by Monday. This year, let's fill them with things they'll actually love and treasure.
We're carrying the most adorable Mon Ami stuffed animals and dolls: bunnies, ballerinas, chicks, lambs, you name it. These aren't just cute; they're heirloom-quality and incredibly soft. Pair one with a beautiful children's book (we have the sweetest collection) and maybe a set of Earth Grown Kid Dough in a nature wonderland.
Anna's Tip: Build an Easter basket that lasts. One gorgeous stuffed animal, a good book, a small toy from Le Toy Van or Kikkerland Design, and maybe a sweet hair bow or special pajamas. Don't forget some candy, of course! Less chaos, more joy, and they'll actually play with it all year long.
Welcome Spring with Intention
Spring is nature's reminder that we get to begin again. Whether that's refreshing your patio, lighting a new candle, or simply putting fresh flowers on your table, these small acts of intentionality matter. They make our homes feel cared for. They make us feel cared for.
So this season, I encourage you to take it slow. Reset one space at a time. Bring in something new that makes you smile. And if you need a little inspiration (or want to see all these beautiful products in person), come visit us at Fern. We've curated it all with you in mind.
Here's to a season of growth, beauty, and homes that feel alive again.
With love and a little bit of pollen,
Anna Marie
