The Heart Behind Little Fern
Every great children's space starts with someone who understands children, not just what delights them, but what they actually need. At Fern, that someone is Allison. As a mother and a teacher, she brings a rare, dual perspective to every decision made for Little Fern, our enchanting children's room in the shop. The result is a collection that feels less like a toy aisle and more a step back to childhood.
Fern believes that the best spaces are curated with intention, and Little Fern is no exception. Allison didn't set out to fill shelves with the loudest, trendiest plastic toys on the market. She set out to find the pieces that would earn a permanent place in a child's world- the ones that get pulled out year after year and that get handed down.

A Mother's Eye and A Teacher's Standards
Allison spends her days in two worlds. As a mother, she knows the particular joy of watching a child lose themselves in imaginative play, and she knows just as well which toys end up forgotten in a bin within a week. As a teacher, she has spent years observing how children actually learn and grow through play- through textures, open-ended stories, and through toys that ask something of their imagination rather than doing all the work for them.
That combination shaped everything about how she sources for Little Fern. Every item haS to pass a simple test: would this hold a child's attention and would it hold up? Is it made well enough to survive real play, and is it designed thoughtfully enough to actually nurture a child's imagination? Those are the toys and the accessories in Little Fern.
A Global Search for Wonder
To build a collection like this, Allison looked well beyond what's easy to find. She sought out heirloom-quality toys and treasures from Europe and beyond, seeking out the makers who still believe childhood deserves to be savored, not scrolled.
That search led her to Mon Ami, whose name means "my friend" in French- a fitting description for their whimsical, heirloom-quality plush dolls and toys. Combining classic European design with soft, huggable textures, these are the kind of stuffed companions a child chooses to sleep with every night for years and put in a keepsake box for the next generation.
It led her to Le Toy Van, whose sustainable, ethically made wooden toys are designed for creative, open-ended play. From play kitchens to wooden castles, Allison chose these knowing they weren't just toys for today, they were toys to be passed down. The Le Toy Van is so beautiful they could be used as playful decor!
It led her to Great Pretenders, whose dress-up capes, crowns, and costumes are built to withstand the wildest, most imaginative adventures a child can dream up. As a teacher, Allison has watched countless children transform the moment they put on a cape or a crown, and she wanted Little Fern to be able to hand a child that same spark.
And it led her to Earth Grown Kids, whose non-toxic, beautifully scented sensory playdoughs keep little hands busy and little minds calm. Allison knows firsthand how powerful sensory play can be, both in a classroom and at the kitchen table at home—as calming as it is creative.
Toys Meant to Be Passed Down
What ties Allison's selections together is a philosophy that runs deeper than trend or aesthetics. She believes childhood deserves the same level of care and craftsmanship that we give to the rest of our homes—that a wooden castle or a soft plush friend can be as thoughtfully made as anything else Fern carries.
Because when a toy is made well, it doesn't just survive childhood. It becomes part of it, waiting on a shelf to be discovered again by the next child in the family, still soft, still sturdy, still ready for its next adventure.
Birthday Wishlists
(Coming soon)
The chaos of a child's birthday party- the well-meaning gifts that never quite fit, the duplicate toys, the things that get outgrown before they're ever really loved. Allison, like others, knows the headache of this repeating process, so she created something Vidalia didn't have before: birthday wishlists for Little Fern!
The idea is simple. Rather than party guests guessing what a child might like, families can now schedule a personal wishlist appointment in-store, where the birthday kid can browse through the Little Fern collection and can pick out the toys, books, and treasures they want!
From there, loved ones can shop the wishlist in person, with every gift wrapped beautifully and ready to hand over. Whatever isn't gifted on the big day can simply be purchased afterward, so nothing about the experience feels wasted or forced. It's a small idea with a big heart behind it- one more way Allison makes sure that every toy that comes home is one that's actually wanted, actually loved, and actually played with for years to come.
